Berwick’s Heritage Open Days are taking place this year between Friday 11th and Sunday 20th September 2020 – but with a difference. Most of the events will take place online. There will be virtual tours, live talks, quizzes, and Question Time sessions, all of which can be enjoyed from home. There will also be self-guided walks to discover different aspects of Berwick’s history, using guides which can be downloaded or followed online. The Eastern Borders History Gather will take place on 4 March 2020 (10.00am-4.00pm) in the Volunteer Hall in Duns. Local history and archaeology will be covered in the presentations, including a report on the Twixt Thistle and Rose project. See the full details below.

Lowick Heritage Group are presenting an exhibition called Lowick Lime, exploring the lime industry’s role in the history of Lowick, at the Experimental Studio, Baltic 39, Newcastle, NE1 1EW; 20-22 November 2019. And on Friday 22 November there will be an event, Unearthing Lowick Lime, from 6pm to 8pm. Part 1 will be an open discussion hosted by Charles Danby and Rob Smith; Part 2 will be a performed reading by members of Lowick Heritage Group of a script written by social historian Julie Gibbs. As part of the Berwick Literary Festival, Linda Bankier and Gilly Beckett are holding an event called “Crime & Creative Writing: using the archives for inspiration”. It takes place on Friday 18th October 2019 at 10.00am in the Parish Centre (Parade). Tickets £6.00. Crime is a perennial theme in literature but what inspires the writer? Linda Bankier will outline the archives sources available on this theme. Gilly Beckett and her Creative Writing group will read excerpts from their stories which were inspired by Berwick’s archives. Berwick’s Heritage Open Days will be held on 13th-15th September 2019, with over 35 events on offer in Berwick, Tweedmouth and Spittal. Berwick Museum and Art Gallery will be open on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th (11am-4pm), and admission will be free of charge to all museums in the Barracks. As well as the permanent displays, Berwick Museum will have the Graft and Glory exhibition showing how engineers and innovators from the North East changed the world, and there will also be some special activities for children.
