  • Lowry at The Storehouse 08/02/2026

    A rarely seen work by L.S Lowry is to go on display at The Storehouse in Berwick Barracks, from Saturday 21st February until 22nd March 2026, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death on 23 February.

    The pencil sketch acquired by The Maltings (Berwick) Trust earlier this year, depicts a boat and figures on the beach at Spittal, Berwick-upon-Tweed and is titled Spittal, Berwick (1960). The work will be exhibited alongside two other Lowry works which form part of the town’s collection Old Berwick (1936) and Beach Scene (1954), and this will be the first time these works have been on public display since Berwick...

  • Museum summer opening 19/07/2024

    With the start of the school holidays, Berwick Museum & Art Gallery is open 7 days per week, continuing until 1st September 2024.  Opening hours are 10am – 4.00pm.

  • Museum opening 24/03/2024

    Berwick Museum and Art Gallery re-opens for the 2024 season on Friday 29 March.  Its regular opening hours are Wednesday – Sunday 10.00am – 4.00pm.  But during Northumberland school holidays and on Bank Holidays it is also open on Mondays and Tuesdays.

    During the coming season the Museum will be marking the 400th anniversary of Berwick Old Bridge.  Some of its artefacts will be on loan to the Civic Society for its exhibition in the Main Guard, and a bridge trail is being devised within the Museum.

  • Ord gold cross 21/03/2023

    The Border Archaeological Society is hosting a lecture on “A holy cross of the early Northumbrian Church: signs & mysteries” on Monday 3 April 2023 at 7.30pm in Berwick Guild Hall.  Professor John Hines of Cardiff University will talk about the significance of the 8th-9th gold cross recently discovered at East Ord; the cross is due to be displayed shortly in Berwick Museum & Art Gallery.

    Admission is free to BAS members; there is a charge of £2.00 for guests.

  • Ord gold cross 27/10/2022

    The FBDMA autumn lecture this year is a joint presentation with the Union Chain Bridge project. On Friday 11th November 2022, at 7.00pm in Berwick Town Hall, Benjamin Westwood, Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, will describe “How the Ord cross returned to Berwick”.  The Ord cross is a re-discovered rare Anglo-Saxon gold cross pendant. Inscribed with its owner’s name, it was lost on the banks of the River Tweed for about 1,000 years.

    The FBDMA was able to make a financial contribution as seed funding towards the acquisition of the cross by Museums Northumberland, and it will be displayed...
