Lowry at The Storehouse

A rarely seen work by L.S Lowry is to go on display at The Storehouse in Berwick Barracks, from Saturday 21st February until 22nd March 2026, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death on 23 February.

The pencil sketch acquired by The Maltings (Berwick) Trust earlier this year, depicts a boat and figures on the beach at Spittal, Berwick-upon-Tweed and is titled Spittal, Berwick (1960). The work will be exhibited alongside two other Lowry works which form part of the town’s collection Old Berwick (1936) and Beach Scene (1954), and this will be the first time these works have been on public display since Berwick Museum and Art Gallery closed for redevelopment over a year ago.

The exhibition is free to visit and open Wednesday – Sunday 11am until 4pm.

To coincide with the exhibition, artists Soul 2 Sand are creating a large raked sand artwork on Spittal Beach on 21 February to commemorate the affection that Lowry had for Berwick and the surrounding area.
