  • Local history talks 12/11/2022

    Two upcoming talks on local topics are being given by Linda Bankier.  On Wednesday 16th November 2022, she will speak about “Berwick-upon-Tweed 1952-2022: a pictorial history”, referring to the recently published photographic book.  This will take place in the Parish Centre, Berwick, starting at 7.30pm, and it forms part of the Berwick History Society programme.

    On Saturday morning 19th November, Linda will talk about “Irregular Border Marriages”, starting at 10.00am at Bell View, Belford.  This is part of the North Northumberland Genealogy Group programme.

  • Berwick’s Guild 21/03/2022

    Northumberland Archives Trust (NACT) has organised a series of evening online lectures by academic experts with regional links.  The lecture on Thursday 31 March 2022 is entitled “What did the Guild know? Politics and information in later C18th Berwick” and it will be given by Dr Ian Harris. He will explore the means by which information about London life and politics could be acquired in Berwick at a time when its ruling body, the Guild, had its own powers of government.

    The lecture is free via Zoom, though donations to NACT will be welcome, and it should be booked on the

  • Irregular marriages 08/12/2021

    A talk on “Irregular Border Marriages” will be given to Berwick History Society by Linda Bankier on Wednesday 15th December 2021.  It will take place in the Parish Centre (Parade) starting at 7.30pm.

  • 100 years ago 28/10/2021

    A wealth of information about Berwick’s history can be found in the accumulating collection of blog posts in the series “Berwick Advertiser – 100 years ago” which is available on the Northumberland Archives website.  A new posting appears every fortnight, and each one contains interesting reports from the newspaper of a century ago, often enhanced by photographs and other illustrations from the Record Office collections. The whole blog collection can be searched by keywords for names or subjects.

  • Archive lectures 23/09/2021

    Northumberland Archives is offering a further series of online evening lectures between October 2021 and March 2022.  In the first of them on Thursday 28 October at 7.00pm Linda Bankier, Berwick Archivist, will speak about “Crime and Punishment in Berwick Archives”, considering the types of records which exist and reveal stories relating to crime and punishment in a small borough on the border with Scotland.
