  • Lowry at The Storehouse 08/02/2026

    A rarely seen work by L.S Lowry is to go on display at The Storehouse in Berwick Barracks, from Saturday 21st February until 22nd March 2026, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death on 23 February.

    The pencil sketch acquired by The Maltings (Berwick) Trust earlier this year, depicts a boat and figures on the beach at Spittal, Berwick-upon-Tweed and is titled Spittal, Berwick (1960). The work will be exhibited alongside two other Lowry works which form part of the town’s collection Old Berwick (1936) and Beach Scene (1954), and this will be the first time these works have been on public display since Berwick...

  • Light of Days Past 16/11/2025

    A new exhibition at The Granary Gallery, entitled The Light of Days Past: Photography in Berwick 18401980, opens on Sunday 26th October 2025 and will remain on show until February 2026.

    Almost since its invention, the art of photography has thrived in Berwick. The town’s first photographic studio opened in 1849 and during the 19th century, travelling photographers, working from mobile studios would stop in the town. Although many of these were fleeting, William De Lan and his three daughters, who were also photographers, eventually made Berwick their home.

  • Autumn Lecture 21/10/2025

    The FBDMA Autumn Lecture will be given by Cameron Robertson, speaking about “The History of Photography in Berwick 1840 – 1950” on Friday 7th November 2025.  It will explore some of the themes and characters featured in the current exhibition at the Granary Gallery, highlighting some of the early photographers who lived in Berwick.

    The lecture will start at 7.00pm in the Parish Centre (Parade, Berwick).  All welcome – admission free.

  • Book launch 12/10/2025

    On Thursday 16 October 2025 at 7.30pm, the publication of a new book entitled “A Spy in a Berwick Garden” will be marked with a launch event and a talk by its authors, Lindsay Allason Jones and Phil Rowett.  Admission free.

  • Berwick Parish Church lecture 02/10/2025

    The construction of Berwick Parish Church began in 1650, and as part of the events to celebrate its 375th anniversary, an illustrated talk will be given by Professor Kenneth Fincham of the University of Kent in the Parish Centre on Friday 24th October 2025 at 7:00pm.  The talk is entitled “A New Church in Tumultuous Times – Berwick Parish Church and the Puritan Revolution of 1640-60”.

    Professor Fincham has written extensively on religion and politics in Tudor and Stuart England. He is a former Vice-President of the Royal Historical Society and an Honorary Fellow of the Historical Association. Among his books are...
