Eglingham Churchyard: “More than just monuments and names”

Eglingham Parish is located to the north west of Alnwick, Northumberland. The church, dedicated to St Maurice, has parish registers dating back to 1662 and covers the surrounding rural area including Beanley, South Charlton and Shipley. The “Friends” carried out a survey of Eglingham Churchyard in 1999, recording the inscriptions on the gravestones and also within the church. Thanks to a grant from Middlemoor Windfarm, operated by RWE, they were able to work with residents of Eglingham between 2023 and 2025 to update the original survey and make it more accessible in this digital age.

During that time, the following work was undertaken:

⇒  The initial survey was checked and updated to reflect the addition of new gravestones and any errors spotted in the original survey

⇒  A new printed version of the survey was produced and placed in Eglingham Church and Berwick Record Office:  see this Name Index (PDF).

⇒  High resolution photographs were taken of all the gravestones as a record of their condition in 2024 and placed in Berwick Record Office.

⇒  Members of the community researched some of the people mentioned on the gravestones following some family history training by the Berwick Archivist.

⇒  A leaflet was created highlighting some interesting monuments in the churchyard – see a copy of the leaflet here (PDF).

⇒  The survey and the gravestone images were made available on the internet via the  Coldstream History Society website on the Eglingham Churchyard web pages.

This project has now made the survey available to a much wider audience and enhanced the information available about the residents of Eglingham and the surrounding area.
