  • Border marriages 19/04/2021

    An online talk entitled “For Better, For Worse: Irregular Border Marriages on the East Coast” is being given by Linda Bankier, Berwick Archivist, on Thursday 29 April 2021, 7.00 – 8.00pm, as part of Northumberland Archives’ series of talks. Linda looks at where these marriages were held, what they involved, and how they came about. She investigates the priests who performed the ceremonies and discusses the records that survive.

  • Portrait of a Town 16/04/2021

    An exhibition based on the Photocentre collection, entitled “Portrait of a Town” will open at the Granary Gallery on 29th May 2021, continuing until the beginning of October.  It focusses on individuals from the town of Berwick captured at work, at play, or in the studio.  The exhibition has been commissioned by Berwick Visual Arts and Northumberland Archives and is curated by Cameron Robertson. It has been supported by FBDMA and the Community Foundation.

  • Re-opening of Record Office 09/04/2021

    With the April relaxation of coronavirus restrictions, the Record Office will open again for personal visitors.  The timetable will be the same as that in force last autumn.  Opening times are Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10.00 – 12.30 and 2.00 – 4.30. A limited number of pre-booked appointments will be available, and social distancing guidelines will need to be observed and facemasks worn.

    Bookings will be handled by Eventbrite (no fees).  Appointments can now be booked for visits starting from Wednesday 21st April 2021.  Follow this link to the site:

  • Spring Lecture and AGM 27/02/2021

    The FBDMA Spring Lecture this year will be given online via Zoom on Friday 26th March 2021, at 7.00pm.  Linda Bankier, Berwick Archivist, will speak on “Archives Revealed – Unlocking Berwick’s Borough Archives”.  During the last two years, an extensive cataloguing operation, as part of the Twixt Thistle & Rose project, has been providing the means of discovering the contents of the town’s archives.  Linda will explore some of the topics and personal stories which have been brought to light in the course of this work.

    The online catalogue of Berwick Borough Archives is now live for searching.  Much of the work to create the entries has been carried out in the Twixt Thistle & Rose project over the last two years.  The records can now be searched in the online Northumberland Archives catalogue at this address:
